Midnight: Legacy of Darkness

2022 / 02 / 02

Hope has long left the land of Eredane. The heroes of Midnight stand against the Shadow’s legions with elf warriors in the frozen woods of northern Erethor. They travel the barren lands of the Dorns and fight a guerilla war in the shadow of the broken Fortress Wall. They join with gnome smugglers to carry food and medicines to the besieged dwarven clans of the Kaladruns. They ride with Sarcosan outlaws and halfling nomads on the open plains of central Eredane. They elude scheming legates and their magic-sniffing spirit servitors as they search for the priceless artifacts of a lost age.

Chronicles of Midnight

Back in the ageless time before the dawn of history, a war broke out in heaven. In desperation, the lords of light severed the infernal spirit of the dark god Izrador, casting him out of the celestial kingdom. Izrador fell to the earth, his foul essence staining the land with its evil shadow.

Three times the malevolent god rose and marched on the nations of Eredane with iron and fire. Twice, brave heroes weathered the storm, casting Izrador back to the shadows, where he would once again wait for the perfect moment to strike. But the third time, a broken and battered Eredane had little fight left, distracted by their own infighting as well by the insidious corruption sown by the Izrador’s spies over the years. The third time, Izrador was ready. The third time, the line was not held.

The third time, the dark god won.

Edge Studio is proud to present Midnight: Legacy of Darkness, the updated third edition of the iconic setting first introduced by Fantasy Flight Games nearly 20 years ago.

About the D20 System

The D20 System stem is used by some of the most popular tabletop games in the world thanks to the Open Gaming License. With a focus on accessibility, Midnight: Legacy of Darkness can be played with a single set of polyhedral dice between players and DM alike. You’ll find plenty of ways to customize your characters and adventures with minimal learning required. Intuitive, simple, and evocative, the D20 System allows you to keep your head in the game and out of the rulebook.

How to Use This Book

Midnight: Legacy of Darkness is designed as supplemental material to the D20 system core rules. Some rules are expanded upon in this product, but it requires a copy of the core rules to play. This book is published under the Open Gaming License, taking the world of Midnight and making it compatible with the current d20 system utilized by other popular games.

This allows players to experience the world of Midnight within the confines of a modern ruleset. Midnight: Legacy of Darkness updates the world of Eredane without sacrificing its core identity.

Throughout this rulebook, you’ll find mechanics and names that are considered Open Gaming License content, and background and story that are unique to the Midnight setting.

The land of Eredane

It’s not about saving the world, it’s about preserving the small spark of light, and hoping the long night will one day pass. Eredane is a land of shadow, what challenges await the few who call themselves heroes in such a broken place? Who would dare even try?

The Heroes of Midnight

Character creation in Midnight: Legacy of Darkness begins with selecting one of six races. Though fans of fantasy will be familiar with halflings, dwarves, and orcs, the versions found here differ drastically thanks to the unique history and circumstances surrounding modern Eredane. The names of the races and their rules content are designated as Open Game Content. The background descriptions are designated as closed content.

For example, Dwarves in Midnight: Legacy of Darkness have similar physical characteristics to those found in the D20 System Reference Document, but have a defined background that impacts their culture and traits. As the Shadow advances, dwarves are becoming an endangered race. Once, over 600 dwarven clans were scattered across the Kaladrun Mountains, now, less than 200 survive. As the Shadow encroaches on their borders, dwarves are a desperate race with their back against the wall. Mechanically, players can choose between two different subraces of Dwarves when creating their characters, both giving unique abilities.

You’ll also select a character class, like races, many of these will be familiar, as their names of the classes in this chapter are designated as Open Game Content. However, the circumstances around their presence in the world of Midnight may drastically differ from the norm. For example, because there are no other gods save Izrador, a paladin does not worship a deity or draw power from their faith. Instead, they rely on the power of their convictions.

A paladin might believe in justice for the oppressed, in freedom for those enslaved by the Shadow, or simply that doing good is even more important in these grim and desperate times. But they hold their convictions so strongly that they are able to produce miracles: healing the sick, inspiring the frightened, and even smiting their foes with radiant energy. Their signature power through belief remains, but the source of that power is unique to Midnight.

The final section of the book provides the DM with all the information they need to run adventures in the world of Midnight. Forbidden knowledge exists in this section, and as such should be for the DM’s eyes only. Only through experiencing the trials laid before them can a champion learn the secrets laid bare within.

The Adventure is Just Beginning

The world of Eredane is in need of champions, if not to save it, then to provide a spark of hope to those who remain the Infernal God’s shadow. What adventures will await you when Midnight: Legacy of Darkness arrives this Spring…
